ALNOLUX S.L. are specialists in the construction of all types of gardens: traditional styles with lawns, rockeries and flower beds; gardens for urban housing developments with standard plantings; tropical and exotic gardens; natural landscape gardens or French-style geometrical gardens. If properly planted, any of these styles can be made to flourish with minimal water consumption. The method of planting we use has come to be known in the Mediterranean climactic region as ‘dry agriculture’. The overriding principle is the reduction of the use of water in gardening, resulting in a substantial saving of one of the most valuable and scarce natural resources in the region. Any type of plant material can be used, when situated in the correct place and adequately maintained. It’s simply a question of learning from the natural landscapes surrounding us. The majority of the indigenous species are, by nature, very water efficient, so much so that many can subsist only on the rainfall in the area.

The combination of trees and plants in our model, and their positioning around the living area can have a major influence on the micro-climate. The orientation of the house determines the selection and location of the trees that surround it, with the objectives of raising the temperature in winter, natural cooling in summer, as well as breaking the prevailing winds in the area. A mixture of deciduous trees, evergreens and climbers are used to achieve this result. For the reasons explained in the Introduction, as well as limitations imposed by the climatic characteristics of our area, we prefer the use of indigenous plants and those that are strongly adaptable. However, this doesn’t preclude the introduction of foreign species to help us attain a composition subtly discordant to the natural setting and add a sprinkling of contrast to the picture.

Three types of zones are defined according to their water requirements: high requirement (regular watering), moderate (occasional watering) and low (no irrigation). The irrigation systems are so flexible in their installation that it eliminates the need of grouping the plants according to their water requirements. Plants can therefore can be situated for purposes of aesthetics and ambience (sun and shade zones, solar warming of the living area, windbreaks and attracting birds). During the establishment phase (8 to 10 weeks after planting) general irrigation of all the plants is recommended.
